Yan graduated from INIS in 2003, and then went to Italy and Japan to assist François Girard on the film Soie. He has made short films, including Pedigree, Papillons Noirs, and Le Revenant, which were presented in international festivals, and since 2006 he has also directed a large number of commercials. He is also known for direction of the first season of 11 Règles, which won the Webfiction jury prize at the prestigious WebTV-Festival in La Rochelle. His first feature, Roche-Papier-Ciseaux was selected as the opening film for the 2013 Rendez-Vous du Cinéma Québécois.
